Good morning Families,

Last week was spent getting to know each other, discussing classroom and school expectations, as well as assessments which will inform my teaching.  We began our math unit also.

This week we will begin our literacy and writing lessons.  At the end of last school year, the district adopted new phonics, reading and writing curriculums.  I will be teaching all three this year.  The phonics curriculum is called Words Their Way and although I didn't pilot it last year, I've heard great things about it.  The district is supposed to have these materials to me mid-September.  The reading and writing curriculums are called Units of Study by Lucy Calkins.  I did pilot these for kindergarten last year and was very impressed.  I'm excited to begin the 3rd grade modules and see where it takes us.

Math, science, and social studies will continue using the same materials as the other 3rd grade classes.

I had a great first week and I enjoyed reading your comments "About Your Child".  Thank you for all the feedback and transparency regarding your child.  And thank you for the positive thoughts, comments and prayers about my mom.  Her appointment went really well and we were relieved to know that the struggles she's currently facing are completely normal following this type of surgery.
