Class Update October 19, 2016

Hello Hello Families!

Reading:  We've begun Book Clubs.  Kids seem to be enjoying this.  Our reading focus has been "Building a Reading Life".  We've talked about making a reading life, understanding the story, and tackling more challenging texts.  Unit 1 has come to an end!  We had a celebration this week and made new reading goals for the next 9 weeks or so.

Writing:  We're are continuing our non-fiction/narrative writing unit.  Students have written several personal narratives and have recently chosen one to focus on for publishing.  Currently, we are discussing and researching things writers do that make us want to keep reading.  As I look ahead, it looks like we will be creating a second personal narrative for publishing before completing this unit.  This unit should take us up to Thanksgiving break.  When we return, we'll start Unit 2, "The Art of Information Writing".

Math:  We've currently been doing lots of measurement around inches and centimeters.  This section should end tomorrow.  We will begin reviewing rounding numbers followed by double digit addition and subtraction to finish up Unit 2.

We've met our 1st grade reading buddies and gotten to know each other a little bit.  This Friday, we'll spend some time doing some reading with our buddies.  On Monday, I have a fun art project planned for us to do with our buddies.  I think kids will be too excited about trick-or-treating and Halloween parties to focus on writing in the afternoon.
